Welcome to Kibera Mpira Mtanni (KIMTA). We are a community based in the Kibera slums in Nairobi, Kenya. The Kibera slums house over 1 million people, mainly young families that have come to Nairobi in search of a better life and and work in the city. Many have come from more rural areas where their families have lived for many years. Unfortunately work and facilities are scarce here and most families are reduced to living in corregated iron and mut huts, with very little money and access to, what many consider basic facilities such as food, toilets, healthcare and education.
Their offices have been tunred into a libary and resource centre forthe children and they hold daily activities and events to try and raise the profile of their organisation whilst bringing an enducation to the children.
Football is one of the main tools they use for this. Football is very popular in Kibera with many children supporting British teams. KIMTA have used football as a tool to reach out to the youth of Kibera and educate them on a variety of subjects including HIV/AIDS, the importance of education, reproductive health and alternatives to crime. Working alongside organizations such as “Alive and Kicking” and “CARE Kenya”, Kibera Mpira Mtaani (KIMTA) uses football tournaments as a way of providing information to the children of Kibera.
For many of these children there are no parents to check up on them or their parents are too busy trying to find work to worry about their childs performance at school or in his friendship group. KIMTA has dedicated coaches that step into this role and coach the children into young men and women. They teach at the schools, they coach sports workshop and they provide ways to the children actively participating in activities without cost. There are also rules that every team must sign up to before taking part in a tournament. These encourage children not to smoke or drink alcohol, to attend school and to behave in a respectable manner.
This is incredibly important and the guys and girls do a fantastic job at providing role models for these impressionable children. Please look to our website and see the owrk that we are doing and if you can please support us so we can contiue to deliver education and life coaching to this commuity.
